FAQ

What exactly is going on with acne?
  • One day your skin is clear, and the next day you wake up to blackheads, and pimples and whiteheads, oh my! It first starts with a few clogged pores or comedomes. You know, those little dark spots that congregate on the nose, forehead, and chin. They seem to be most prominent in the T-zone, where there is more oil. These non-inflammatory blemishes occur when dead surface skin cells mix with oil (sebum). Once these skin cells and oil combine, their first mission is to form a plug right there in your pore! Due to exposure to air, oxidation occurs and voila, you have a blackhead or what's technically known as an open comedone. Open comedones can also appear right next to a closed comedone or whitehead. These elevated white bumps occur when the plug is trapped under the skin’s surface.

Besides these non-inflammatory blemishes, you may also have larger, more inflamed breakouts. Inflammatory acne starts with excess skin cells and oil plus a pore-aggravating bacteria called P. Acnes. Once that bacteria is added to the mix, you have pustules, redness, and overall irritation.
What effect does stress have?
  • Stress can have physiological effects on the body, including stimulating a hormone that encourages the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, increasing the chances of breaking out
What else can contribute to acne?
  • Genetics: did you know that if your parents or someone in your family had acne, your risk is higher? This is due to the P. Acnes bacteria that is hereditary.
  • Hormones: as hormone levels in the teen years surge, the onset of acne occurs. Certain hormones trigger the sebaceous gland to produce more oil, resulting in more clogged pores. Monthly hormonal fluctuations as well as those experienced at the onset of menopause contribute to acne.
Can Acne be cured?
  • Acne cannot be cured. However, it can be managed and controlled with a complete skincare regimen featuring a combination of ingredients designed to treat all the causes of skin breakouts.
Does eating certain foods make it worse?
  • There is no evidence to suggest that eating chocolate and french fries will cause breakouts. However, a healthy diet does contribute to overall skin health so it is important to eat right to help keep your skin looking it's best.
Does washing the skin very hard help?
  • Over washing can actually strip your skin of moisture causing skin irritation, which in turn can aggravate acne. Gently washing your skin twice a day with a mild cleanser, like Clarifying Skin Cleanser, will remove excess oil and bacteria without causing dryness.
Do adults get acne, or just teenagers?
  • Acne is a condition experienced by people of all ages. The most common skin disorder in the US, it is estimated that 25 to 30% of all acne prone skin can be found among adults over the age of 18. In adults, acne seems to be more prevalent on the lower portion of the face. The chin and jawline are common areas of breakouts, especially for adult women, and is usually caused by hormones and stress. In adolescents breakouts generally occur on the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin.
Does the sun help "dry up" your skin and reduce acne?
  • Sun exposure or tanning should be avoided. While a suntan or sunburn can temporarily mask the acne breakouts, it only leads to increased skin inflammation and dehydration, which can cause the skin to break out even more. Sun exposure can also cause pigmentation from acne breakouts, leaving you with dark spots on your face or body. To protect acne prone skin, always wear sunscreen with an SPF 15.
Are blackheads filled with dirt?
  • It is a common misconception that the black color is caused by dirt. Rather, the discoloration is a result of oxidation. Picture an apple. When it is cut and exposed to air, it turns brown. This same process occurs with blackheads. Because they are open to the surface of the skin, they are exposed to air and they oxidize.
Will these products help my acne on other parts of my body?
  • Definitely! Skin is skin and our acne products contain ingredients to treat all the major causes of skin breakouts wherever they occur. Breakouts on the body are most common where oil glands are most pervasive on the back, chest, and shoulders. Because it can be difficult to reach these areas in order to apply products, Pure Skin® Skin Clarifying Supplements are the perfect solution. They help attack acne from the inside, reducing acne 36 % in 3 weeks and 55% in just 6 weeks!
If my skin is oily, do I still need to use a moisturizer?
  • Yes. The most important thing to remember about moisturizer is that it is water; not grease, and even oily skin needs water. Imagine a raisin. This is what skin cells look like when they lack water. Moisturizer will improve the quality of your skin and keep your cells looking like a grape (healthy skin cells that look like a grape improve the quality of all skin types, even acne and oily prone skin).
My breakouts have healed, but they left behind spots?
  • Those spots that remain are caused by the inflammation that has occurred in the skin. These discolorations can range from red to dark brown, depending on your skin tone. As a blemish heals, excess pigment is generated in the area where the trauma was. These superficial pigmented scars will heal faster with the help of anti-inflammatory ingredients such as: Zinc, Black Cohosh, Licorice and Green Tea. Products high in Vitamin C are also ideal for fading pigmentation. To keep your skin tone clear, never pick and most importantly, use sun protection every day.
What is the best way to begin the Acne Complex regiment?
  • The key to success is to use the products regularly, even as your skin begins to clear. However, as with any new skincare regimen, your skin may need time to adjust. We recommend that you apply the treatment product (such as Acne Prone Skin Formula) only once a day for the first two weeks of use. After 2 weeks, when your skin has acclimated to the product, begin using it twice a day.
